Ebook About
Clever, lush, and riveting, with the same wry humor and vivid characters that delighted fans of its prequel, The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic, Emily Croy Barker's new novel opens a portal into a brilliantly realized world of enchantment, love, and danger. For readers of Philip Pullman, Deborah Harkness, Catherynne Valente, and Susanna Clarke.Nora knows she needs to move on, and forget about magic. She's back in graduate school, and her life is going surprisingly well. She doesn't need to think about other worlds, about enchantments and demons, or about magicians—even though she once aspired to become one herself. Most of all, she really should forget the magician Aruendiel, who shared the secrets of magic with her but fiercely guarded the deepest secrets of his heart. Then a chance encounter gives Nora the opportunity to slip between worlds again—and the next phase of her magical education begins.“I'm not sure what I love more about How to Talk to a Goddess and Other Lessons in Real Magic—its immersive world of enchantments, so lavishly imagined, or its characters, who are wise and funny and flawed, who win me over with their compelling voices, their wit and heart. A splendid follow-up to The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic—a sparkling, smart, irresistible read.”—Sally Rosen Kindred, author of Book of Asters and Where the Wolf“In Emily Croy Barker's new novel, magic happens exquisitely, seductively, dangerously.”—Richard Horan, author of Goose Music and Seeds

Book How to Talk to a Goddess and Other Lessons in Real Magic Review :

Regardless of my opinions of the novel itself, I feel that the person who was voicing the novel did a fairly decent job of it. Her timing and pronunciation felt smooth, and another nice touch was that she did voices for the characters to help distinguish between them. Alyssa Bresnahan is probably the only reason I've decided to give this audio book 2 stars. I wouldn't give it 0 stars if not for her, it still at least deserves 1 star...I regret buying this audio book. I recommend, that if you still desire to read/listen to this book, then use the free trial of Audible to do so... you'll discover, likely by chapter 8, that you will not wish to continue listening/reading.I enjoyed the first book enough, though I found even in that one I was quite often figuring things out faster than the protagonist, Nora. She hardly appears to be as clever as the synopsis or the reviews comparing her to Hermione would make you think. In How to Talk to a Goddess... It just feels like Nora hasn't grown as a character much at all... Contemplating things that would be ridiculous to even entertain.[SPOILERIFIC AFTER THIS]I honestly couldn't even finish this book I was so frustrated with it all. Nora gets involved, rather quickly, romantically with Aruendiel. The relationship was welcomed in my mind, however the slow burn from the first book made it so much more entertaining, which I felt was cheapened by them banging pretty much as soon as she gets through the portal (to which, for those interested, is not described in detail and is quite vague), only to THROW IT ALL AWAY the next morning. To anyone clever enough, it's quite obvious that it's some kind of spell or illusion or maybe related to the ring still on her finger.. but come ON?! Because of my frustration, I found myself looking at other reviews for this audio book, and discover that nearly most of the book has the two separate from one another and when they do come into contact, they apparently aren't even very amicable...[END of SPOILERS]I don't think I've ever been more upset or frustrated with a novel than I have with this one. It had so much promise for another good slow burn of romance, of magic, of more discovery of a foreign world, perhaps even a chance for this woman Nora to actually be clever like she's supposed to be...
I have hesitated to write this review, simply because I loved the first book so much. But it's obvious that the author struggled here. No surprise: it took her some eight years to come up with this sequel. Having read it, I can only think that the main purpose was to tie up unfinished business for her readers. That happens, but something important has been lost along the way.The texture, the detail of the first book is very much lacking: Nora's struggles with language, with who she really loves, with women's roles in the culture she finds herself in, even the food she eats, everything that made the first book so rich, relatable and satisfying, is missing. Instead we have a headlong adventure where Nora's love for Aruendiel is pretty much resolved from the start. And she's somehow become a magical ninja, even though her return to the magical world takes place only a month after her return to her own life. Yes, I know that she's siphoning someone else's power in this sequel. But Nora's behavior and abilities just don't seem earned, as they did in the first book.BTW, I also couldn't believe that the character we've come to know would leave her family again in such a headlong fashion, that she'd set up her old boyfriend for suspicion of murder in yet another disappearance, that suddenly everything is crystal clear in her personal life.Instead, questions are dealt with in quick succession: here's who Micher Samle is, here's what happens to Ilissa and Raclin, here's Hirizjahkinis. If those answers are what you wanted to know, read this book. I mean, read it anyway. But if you're expecting the luxurious detail and escapism of the first book, you won't find it here.
